Silver, Rhodium Plating, Gold Plating, and Gold Vermeil Explained
Every Kofsky & Stone design is crafted on a 925 sterling silver base, then finished in one of three ways depending on the piece.
Rhodium plated sterling silver
Rhodium is a precious metal from the platinum family. When applied over sterling silver, it enhances brightness, improves resistance to wear, and helps reduce tarnishing while preserving the silver foundation beneath.
18k gold plated sterling silver
Gold plating involves applying a thin layer of 18k gold over sterling silver. This finish offers the look of gold at a more accessible price point while maintaining a genuine precious metal core.
18k gold vermeil over sterling silver
Gold vermeil is a thicker layer of 18k gold applied over sterling silver. Compared to standard gold plating, vermeil uses a heavier gold coating, offering increased durability and a longer wearing finish while retaining a silver core.
In all cases, the underlying metal remains 925 sterling silver.
Our Approach to Silver at Kofsky & Stone
At Kofsky & Stone, silver is not an afterthought. It is the foundation of every piece.
All jewellery is designed on a sterling silver base, then finished in rhodium plating, 18k gold plating, or 18k gold vermeil to enhance durability, colour, and wearability.
Our focus is on creating pieces that feel considered, substantial, and lasting rather than trend driven.
We prioritise:
• 925 sterling silver across all designs
• Finishes that protect and elevate the silver beneath
• Timeless silhouettes intended for long term wear
